Cooperation in the Fields of Energy Production and Security is one of the Priorities of Strategic Partnership between Ukraine and Lithuania

Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, made this statement in his speech at the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland held in Vilnius. He declared that this topic has recently been in the limelight of the Ukrainian-Lithuanian relations.

He attaches great importance to the Memorandum between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of the Lithuanian Republic on Cooperation in the Energy Sector, which mentions priority areas of Ukrainian-Lithuanian energy cooperation and is the main regulatory tool of implementation of common energy projects.

V.Lytvyn stated that striving for integration into the European energy market, Ukraine would strengthen security of energy sources supply, provide transparency in the energy sector and participate in the common energy projects.

To extend Ukrainian-Lithuanian cooperation in energy issues, Ukraine intended to participate in the construction of a new nuclear power plant in the territory of Lithuania by attraction of Ukrainian companies and experts, and delivery of materials and equipment produced in Ukraine.

V.Lytvyn confirmed willingness of Ukraine to share its experience in withdrawal of Chornobyl nuclear power plant from operation, since "the premises of this NPP are always open for the Lithuanian researchers from the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant."

The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine expects that the bilateral agreement between the State Nuclear Regulatory Committee of Ukraine and the Lithuanian State Nuclear Safety Inspectorate on exchange of information and cooperation in the safety regulation by the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes will be ratified.

He believes that supply of electrical energy from Ukraine to Lithuania using the transit capacities of Belarus could embody such cooperation. "Belarus should be involved in common affairs, both trilateral and common European, as alienation of Belarus would be harmful for Belarus and its people" he admitted.  The economic entities of three countries are currently specifying the technical guidelines of this project, V.Lytvyn informed.

The Head of the Parliament also stated that Ukraine was willing to join the Lithuanian experts in thorough studies and introduction of Lithuania´s experience in the energy-saving technologies, use of renewable energy sources, production and use of biofuel.
